Ouya, the Android-based console which launched on Kickstarter back in 2013, is getting switched off.
Ouya was touted as ‘a new kind of game console’ and raised over $8.5million on Kickstarter. The console ran on Android and games could be downloaded via an online app store, called ‘Discover’. Sadly the Ouya didn’t turn out to be the success everyone wanted it to be.
The assets of Ouya was purchased by Razer in 2015, and the platform limped on. On June 25th 2019, Razer will be switching off the Ouya service. They say: “access to the Discover section will no longer be available. Games downloaded that appear in Play may still function if they do not require a purchase validation upon launch”
Many people have hacked the Ouya to use as an emulation platform. If you’ve a soon-dead Ouya gathering dust, you may now want to consider it.
